Go Crazy at Gravity Canyon!
Gravity canyon is a must do on anybody's itinerary while traveling the North Island, whether your daring or not. Their professional set up next to the colossal Mokai canyon boasts some world firsts in extreme activities. They have the North Island's highest bungy jump, which is a thrill at 80 metres above the shallow river below. They have the world's highest tandem swing, which is their newest attraction, and their most gut wrenching as you free fall for 50 metres before being thrust into a swing at the bottom of the gorge. For the first two to three seconds your stomach is clenched, and you couldn't let out a yell if you tried. For the speed demons out there you can take a 10 minute walk up the hill to do the world's fastest flying fox at 160 kilometres an hour down a one kilometre cable, with exceptional views of the spectacular ravine.
Magazine editor's note: I recently visited this epic canyon for myself, and was feeling rather courageous. I gave all three activities a go, and had a blast. Their quality equipment kept me feeling as safe as possible, and the friendly staff remembered my name and made me feel welcome. The giant swing was my personal favourite, and it feels more like a freefall than a swing, as you wait a life time for the ropes to take the slack while falling 50 metres straight down. I recommend you check the site out next time you're in the area, as it was one of the best trips I've had in a long time.
